Dongbei Special Steel Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as DBSS) was graded as a national-level technology center in 2007. It consists of seven R&D departments of products, including Stainless Steel R&D Department, Tool and Die Steel R&D Department, Automobile Steel R&D Department, Spring Steel R&D Department, Structural Steel R&D Department, Bearing Steel R&D Department, and Precision Alloy R&D Department, along with one technical management office.

With profound technology and academic atmosphere, the technology center of DBSS boasts top-class R&D teams specializing in special steel products in China. As of the end of December 2023, there were over 200 researchers, one expert enjoying the Special Government Allowance of the State Council, two experts receiving municipal government allowances, four individuals with doctoral degrees, 75 individuals with master’s degrees, as well as 120 individuals holding senior professional titles, three of which enjoy professor-level senior titles. In order to enhance the technical innovation, DBSS has established long-term stable collaborations with Central Iron & Steel Research Institute (CISRI), Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS), Northeastern University (NEU), University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), Dalian University of Technology (DUT), University of Science and Technology Liaoning (USTL) and other research institutes and well-known universities, taking full advantage of their technology and talent. A National Engineering and Research Center for Advanced Steel Technology (NERCAST) was jointly funded by CISRI, USTB and other shareholders in 2005. A Dalian Special Alloy Steel Engineering Laboratory was established jointly with DUT aiming at the research and development of special alloys, thus applying research findings to the practical production.

In order to advance iron and steel materials and technologies, the technology center of DBSS has equipped with first-class analysis and inspection equipment imported from the United States, Japan, Germany and Switzerland. Equipment includes scanning electron microscopes, high temperature tensile tester, persistent creep testing machine, universal material microscopes, fluorescence spectrophotometer, rapid component analysis system, automatic polishing machines, automatic Brinell and Rockwell hardness testers, inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometers, low temperature impact testers, as well as water invasion ultrasonic flaw detectors.

With a strong emphasis on technological innovation, DBSS has established an internal mechanism of it and increased investment in it. For the last few years, the company’s annual investment in research and development have accounted for over 4% of the sales revenue. Furthermore, DBSS has formulated 63 standards and participated in the formulation of another 21 ones. Up to now, the Chinese National Patent Office has recognized 20 projects for DBSS’s core technologies. 32 projects have been awarded the “Golden Cup Prize” for the product quality.

As specialized in high-quality and high value-added special steel and enjoyed a good reputation around the world for its development and research of “Advanced, Sophisticated and New” special steel products, DBSS has always been a main R&D, production and supply base for high-end special steel in the high-tech area in China. In the recent years, DBSS has supplied a mass of newly special steel products widely used in R&D projects for upgrading, such as aerospace engineering, China’s domestically developed jet, nuclear power, mould manufacturing, wind power, high-speed railway, car localization, and steel for oil exploitation.
